Cops arrest suspect in murder case of first Tshwane casualty

Police have confirmed that they have arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of African National Congress (ANC) member Simon Mollo Modihe two Sundays ago. “Yes‚ we have made an arrest‚” Colonel Noxolo Kweza told Sowetan.She would not say when the suspect would appear in court. “I don't think [he'll appear] today‚” she said.The suspect was nabbed on Tuesday in Tshwane. Kweza confirmed he will be charged with murder‚ with a possibility of more charges.Mollo Modihe became the first casualty of the unrest in Tshwane sparked by the ANC's decision to nominate Thoko Didiza as its mayoral candidate for the city.He was shot dead outside the Tshwane Events Centre where ANC branch leaders had gathered to be briefed about the party's preferred mayoral candidate.Unrest spread across townships in Tshwane last week‚ claiming four more lives. Police said the four were killed during looting attacks.Protestors‚ who included ANC members and residents‚ said they did not want Didiza as a mayoral candidate. They wanted incumbent mayor Kgosientso Ramakgopa retained.Police arrested 200 people last week.They were charged with public violence‚ possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition‚ possession of stolen property and malicious damage to property.Calm has since returned in the city...
