Zimbabwe's Solomon Mujuru, one of the two leading contenders to succeed aging President Robert Mugabe has died, says family sources, adding further turmoil to the country's political situation.

Mujuru, the former commander of the national army, was seen as a one of the most powerful figures in the country.

His wife Joice is one of the country's two vice presidents. There were unconfirmed reports on Tuesday that he had been killed in a fire at his home on the eastern outskirts of Harare, late Monday or early Tuesday.
