About 100 members of the Swaziland Democracy Campaign have protested outside parliament against the R2.4-billion the government has lent to King Mswati III.

Led by Cosatu, the campaign plans to march in Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth tomorrow.

Cosatu's Western Cape provincial organiser, Mike Louw, said: "The bailout is unacceptable. The only legitimate way of providing a loan is under the condition that political prisoners are released, and that the Swazi government agrees that political parties and trade unions can operate freely."

A group of 30 Cosatu leaders, including the federation's deputy president, Zingiswa Losi, have been in Swaziland since Monday, taking part in a week of protests organised by Swazi trade unions. Another 50 are to join them.

Skhumbuzo Phakathi, secretary-general of the banned Peoples United Democratic Movement of Swaziland, said 2000 people had marched in the Swazi capital, Mbabane yesterday, many burning kanga cloths bearing images of Mswati's face.

We have enough internal strife and violent protests without giving COSATU another reason to demonstrate against this government. It's not too late for SA to admit the mistake and withhold payments to Swaziland. Indications are that this was a bad decision.

Surely it's time to lean on this silly monarchy, instead of continuing to prop it up? The people of Swaziland surely deserve to have a democratic government. Our government of all people should appreciate the call of the Swazi people - or have they such short memories? Not too long ago, an evil alliance of the USA's Reagan and Britian's Thatcher supported an illegitimate apartheid regime of PW Botha, thereby unnecessarily prolonging our democracy!
