UN security council urges rebels to negotiate in Darfur

The UN Security Council is urging all armed movements in Darfur to negotiate peace with the Sudanese government and is warning that those on both sides who attack civilians and impede the peace process can face sanctions.
The council issued the appeal and warning in a resolution adopted unanimously Friday which extends the mandate of the panel of experts monitoring the implementation of sanctions in Darfur until Feb. 17, 2013.
The western region of Darfur has been torn by conflict since 2003 but the conflict has tapered off since 2009. Several rebel groups have signed peace deals with the government but Darfur's two main rebel factions, the Justice and Equality Movement and the Sudan Liberation Movement, have not.
