Suspected Muslim herdsmen have attacked a Christian village in the restive central Nigeria's Plateau State, killing an unknown number of people.

The attack on Kankuru village in Riyom local government area and near the flashpoint state capital of Jos happened around 7:00 am, they said.

"Presently the casualty figures are not yet known. But there are casualties," Captain Salisu Mustapha, a spokesman for the military special task force deployed in the region, told AFP.

He said the gunmen, suspected to be Muslim Fulani herdsmen, stormed the mainly Christian village with guns and matchetes, adding that the military had taken over the area to contain the violence.

Plateau state police spokesman Emmanuel Abuh said his men had also moved in.

Riyom is near Jos where thousands have died in communal and sectarian clashes in recent years.

There have also been a number of attacks attributed to Islamist group Boko Haram in recent months.
