A crocodile killed and ate a pregnant woman on the shores of a lake in north-eastern Uganda, a senior wildlife official said Thursday, making her the 30th victim of such reptile attacks in the east African nation this year.

Twenty-five-year-old Dementilia Nabwire, who was two months pregnant, was collecting firewood on the shores of Lake Kyoga with several other women on Wednesday, when a crocodile jumped out of the water and pulled her into the lake.

Crocodile attacks on humans are on the increase because fish stocks in lakes have been decreasing, Uganda Wildlife Authority official Peter Ogwang told dpa.

"The woman, we have learnt, was killed by the crocodile. These animals are lacking to eat and are attacking people," said Ogwang.
