A Zimbabwean man in Masvingo province has reportedly been arrested for allegedly beating his teenage son to death, after the boy farted during a family meal, according to a news report on Thursday.

According to New Zimbabwe, Solomon Musavengana, 48, caned the boy with a sjambok in the kitchen, where the family had been having supper.

An eyewitnesses said Munyaranzi Musavengana, 13, fell near the kitchen door as he was trying to escape the punishment.

The father caught up with him and allegedly violently whipped him several times.

Afterwards, the teenager complained of a terrible headache. He collapsed and died, despite the family's attempts to administer first aid, the report said.

Police said the father was arrested and would appear in court soon.

Cases of parents brutally whipping their children were often reported in the southern African country.

Last year, a man was charged with murder after whipping his four-year-old son for soiling his pants, according to reports.
