The Star reported that Justa Kawira, 22, was hospitalised in the capital Nairobi after John Wachira, her husband of six years, gave her a serious beating for stealing money.

Kawira said the husband claimed he could not find his money inside the house after he arrived home drunk.

"I told him I did not steal any money, but he started beating me until I fled to a friend's house, before returning on Monday after he left for work," she was quoted as saying.

A video clip posted to Youtube by KTV TV, shows Wachira dragging Kawira into their house on a cemented floor and stamping on her in a dark room.

Later on, Kawira appeared with a bloody face.

Kawira's mother, Anne, said she had tried in vain over the years to get her daughter out of the abusive relationship.

"I have tried and tried, but now this cannot happen again. It must end now," said the mother.

Wachira was arrested and released on bail, pending investigations into the matter.

According to the Kenya Law Reform, cases of domestic violence in the country have surged in the past few years.
