Cosatu joins education march
The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) will join 40 civil society organisations on June 10 in a march through Johannesburg to promote the right to education, the union federation says
"We have all joined this unprecedented civil society coalition due to our deep concern around the state of education, and have united to ensure that the energies of the World Cup are harnessed to recommit the world to urgent quality public education for all," Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said in a statement.
Members taking part in the peaceful march would meet at Pieter Roos Park at 11am and march through to Constitution Hill, Vavi said.
Those involved in the march were encouraged to write their concerns about education, both locally and internationally, on a yellow card and hand it to officials at the march.
The yellow cards would then be handed to heads of state at the Education Summit taking place during the World Cup.
President Jacob Zuma had organised the summit in an effort to bring attention to the issue of education and it would be the first high-level political summit ever held during a major sporting event, Vavi said.
"The Education Summit is a critical moment which provides a platform for world leaders to commit to education rights."
The march was part of another global movement promoting education rights, 1GOAL, which was currently operating in 120 countries, he said.
