Stocks fell yesterday in another late-day roller-coaster, dragged lower by declines in energy shares as the US probe of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico deepened.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 40.73 points, or 0.41%, to end at 9899.25. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 6.35 points, or 0.60%, to finish at 1055.65.
The Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 11.72 points, or 0.54%, to close at 2158.85.
Gold retreated as weaker safe-haven demand and comments by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke weighed down on the metal after it hit a record high in the previous session.
It fell $15.50 to $1228.50 at the close in New York.
