Supervisor spills beans on Health Department fraud

A Health Department employee implicated in a graft scandal has turned State witness against colleagues and started spilling the beans in the Zwelitsha Regional Court.

Weziwe Somkwala, 52, a supervisor at the department at the time of the alleged crimes, told the court how her fellow employees had allegedly defrauded the government by colluding on small tenders that escaped scrutiny.

Somkwala was testifying in the two- year-long fraud trial of Ethembeni clinic supervisor Pumla Mdladana; owner of a service provider to the Department of Health, Linda Sogaula; senior manager Mzikazi Nteyi; and local service area manager for the Amahlati district, Nontuthuzelo Cubeni.
