Economic downturn 'not to be wasted'

The global economic downturn was an opportunity that should not be wasted, Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane says.

"We cannot waste this crisis," Mokonyane told a conference on economic recovery in Ekurhuleni.

"Let's learn from this, and not lament this," she said.

"Our actions now will determine the extent to which we will be ready to take full advantage of the growth period ahead."

Gauteng MEC for economic development Firoz Cachalia said that more involvement was needed on a local level between the private sector, government and trade unions.

He added that there were indications the downturn was ending.

"We have reason to be rationally optimistic" said Cachalia.
