Cope welcomes ABI settlement

Sapa | 09 February, 2010 11:550 Comments

The Congress of the People has welcomed the wage settlement at cooldrink bottlers Amalgamated Beverage Industries (ABI).

The dispute had been characterised by violence and acerbic tensions in the townships between strikers, non-strikers and unemployed people employed as scabs, Cope Gauteng MPL Ndzipho Kalipa said on Tuesday.

Kalipa said the company's management should "display maturity when engaging in negotiations after budgeting its wage bill appropriately, rather than stretching financial resources due to mounting pressures".

Fawu said on Tuesday it was pleased the strike at ABI was over, but that it would continue lobbying against labour brokers.

"We remain convinced that the plight of workers on the registrar of labour brokers and working for owner-driver delivery trucks is firmly on the agenda as a result of the strike and will be adequately addressed," Fawu spokesman Katishi Masemola said.

The union would also picket to have Coca-Cola, one of ABI's products, removed as a Fifa World Cup sponsor if these demands were not met.

Meanwhile, Masemola planned a roadshow for Tuesday to inform workers of the settlement agreement reached on Monday.

The union still had to decide how it would conduct its campaign to have Coca-Cola removed as a sponsor but, said Masemola, it would probably involve picketing.
