THANDI TOBIAS-POKOLO

Minister of trade and industry: Rob Davies

Davies was appointed in May.

He has been a member of parliament since 1994. He worked in the Department of Economic Policy at the ANC's head office. From 1990 to 1994, he was a professor and co-director of the Centre for Southern African Studies at the University of the Western Cape and conducted policy research for the ANC and the Southern African Development Community.

Davies has an honours degree in economics, a master's in international relations from the University of Southampton and a doctorate from the University of Sussex in political studies.

Deputy minister of trade and industry: Bongi Maria Ntuli

Ntuli has held the position since May. She has been a member of parliament since 1994. She has also been a member of the joint monitoring committee on improvement of quality of life and status of women, a member of the portfolio committee on trade and industry and a member of the ANC Women's League.

Deputy minister of trade and industry: Thandi Tobias-Pokolo

Tobias-Pokolo was appointed in May.

She was chairman of the portfolio committee on public works and the chairman of the portfolio committee on defence. She has also been a member of the standing committee on public accounts, the joint monitoring committee on improvement of quality of life and status of children, youth and disabled persons.

Director-general of trade and industry: Tshediso Matona

Matona was appointed in July 2006. He became acting director-general of the department in April 2005 and served until June 2006. He was appointed deputy director-general of the international trade and economic development division in 2002. Before that, he held various managerial positions in the department, including that of trade negotiations from 1995 to 2002. He also served as a trade diplomat in the South African Mission to the UN and World Trade Organisation in Geneva from 1996 to 1998.
