HOSPITALITY: Clive Bennett has a long track record in industry

Clive Bennett has been appointed managing director of One & Only Cape Town. He was MD of Red Carnation Hotels SA, part of a global group of five-star hotels.

He will report to Alan Leibman, president/MD of Kerzner International.

Bennett will be responsible for overall operations of One & Only Cape Town, and will be involved in the strategic growth and development of Kerzner International.

He joined Red Carnation Hotels as general manager of The Twelve Apostles Hotel in 2004 and he was later appointed MD of Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Retreat in the Cederberg. Two years later, after negotiating the purchase of The Oyster Box in Umhlanga, Bennett was appointed MD of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection in SA.He has worked in Europe as MD of a banqueting production business, and then as GM of the Annabelle Hotel in Cyprus.

Bennett was born in Singapore and studied hotel management and completed his training at The Savoy in London. He then spent six years at the Carlton Hotel in Johannesburg. In 1987, he was appointed GM of the Royal Hotel in Durban, where he worked for five years before moving on to the parent company, the Three Cities hotel group, as executive director.

  • Manglin Pillay has been appointed CEO of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE). As a civil engineer with particular interest in environmental engineering, he gained experience primarily in the municipal solid- waste and mining-waste management sector.

Pillay spent over a year in national government, followed by seven years as a professional consultant. He completed his degree in civil engineering (environmental) at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2002, and is completing his research topic in diversity management for an MBA at the Wits Business School.

  • AMEC Minproc has appointed Liam Cafferty as business development executive. Cafferty will be responsible for new business leads and also for reviewing the company's business development strategy for Africa. Cafferty was previously GM of special projects and business development for Bateman Engineering Projects.
  • Johnson Controls, which is involved in energy efficiency in buildings, has appointed Karl van Eck Africa regional GM of its new global energy solutions division. This division will offer services to assist organisations to better manage their energy usage, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs while creating a more comfortable and safe environment for building occupants.

Van Eck is also a director of Shared Energy Management, a joint venture between Johnson Controls and Spoormaker & Partners, a designer of heating ventilation and air-conditioning systems for buildings.
