A day after meeting Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leaders‚ former president Thabo Mbeki had a visit from African National Congress (ANC) Johannesburg mayoral candidate Parks Tau on Tuesday. He said Tau came to brief him on the ANC'S campaign ahead of Wednesday's local government election. This was not the first time the Johannesburg mayor had visited Mbeki. Last month‚ the two met at the Thabo Mbeki Foundation.Tau and Mbeki dismissed the assertion that the ANC visit was an effort to counter the EFF'S visit on Monday.EFF leader Julius Malema‚ after his visit with the former statesman‚ took a dig at Tau‚ saying‚ unlike the mayor‚ he had met Mbeki at his house.Live results, cool maps, fierce battlegrounds: follow the local elections on our web app:http://bit.ly/2apwZKUMbeki‚ wearing a black ANC jacket‚ said it was "perfectly legitimate" for the Gauteng mayoral candidates to come see him as he was a resident in the province.Tshwane mayoral candidate Thoko Didiza and Ekurhuleni candidate Mzwandile Masina were meant to be part of the visit‚ but Mbeki said he was informed that they had "urgent matters" to attend to in their areas.Mbeki said he was willing to meet with anyone‚ saying he had also met with Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane."Mmusi has come already. He asked me‚ I said fine; the EFF asked to come‚ I said fine; the (ANC) mayoral candidates asked‚ I said fine."You can't chase anyone away."Tau said his visit to Mbeki had nothing to do with the EFF's. He said‚ during his last meeting with Mbeki‚ he told the former president he would visit again. The ANC in Gauteng has been asking Mbeki to come on the campaign trail‚ but this hasn’t happened.Mbeki explained on Tuesday that he was not snubbing the party.“I have to be wondering around the continent quite a bit‚” he said‚ adding that he was in Tanzania last week. “I think the campaign is in capable hands.”Mbeki will be voting on Wednesday. He said he hoped there would be a high voter turnout at this election.Mbeki also reminded councillor candidates that‚ if they were elected‚ their job would be to serve the people.TMG Digital/BDlive..
