Big early lead for IFP in Ulundi

The Inkatha Freedom Party has taken a significant early lead in Ulundi.

As at 1am‚ the IFP enjoyed the lion’s share of the votes counted at 76.62%‚ ahead of the African National Congress which had 17.85%. In the third place was the EFF with 4.2%.

The Ulundi Local Municipality is located in north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal and is currently under the control of the IFP.

Ulundi was expected to be one of the battlegrounds in KwaZulu-Natal‚ following the disqualification of the National Freedom Party‚ which was expected to put in a strong showing there.

IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi this week vowed to retain all the municipalities which were under the control of his party.

He also urged members of the NFP‚ who would not be taking part in most of the municipal elections‚ to support the IFP.

Nationally. at about 1.30am‚ 10% of the votes had been counted in the 22 612 voting stations which were opened on Wednesday. The ANC led with 51.19%‚ followed by the Democratic Alliance with 34.34% and the third place was taken by the Economic Freedom Fighters with 5.2% of the votes.
