Zackie's same-sex divorce
AIDS activist Zackie Achmat and his partner, Dalli Weyers, have parted ways.
But the pair, who exchanged vows under a gazebo before 300 guests three years ago, have split "amicably".
The couple were married at the Imperial Yacht Club in Lakeside, near Cape Town, with guests sitting on bales of hay with picnic blankets. The cake was designed to look like a tower of chocolate brownies.
"After consulting Dalli, we both agree, as friends, that we have no comment on our divorce, which is an amicable one," said Achmat.
"Dalli and I regard our divorce as a private matter. This comment in no way prevents you from reporting," he told the Sunday Times.
Shortly before tying the knot in January 2008, Weyers said: "We decided that the marriage statement as a same-sex couple was a profound one, and we want the union to be seen as equal (to those of heterosexuals)."
The ceremony was performed by Aids activist and author Judge Edwin Cameron, who obtained a special licence to preside over the union.
Former British high commissioner Ann Grant was the master of ceremonies, and local singer Karen Zoid performed at the reception.
Achmat's Facebook profile now lists his status as single.
