Since the world's most popular encyclopaedia (Wikipedia, for those who don't know) has shut down for the day, Twitter users across the world are sharing their own unverified, entirely made-up facts.

Wikipedia is closed for the day in order to protest the US bills Stop Online Piracy and its Senate equivalent Protect Intellectual Property Act.

The hashtag for the worldwide trending topic is #factswithoutwikipedia. These are some of our favourites.

  • The plate was invented by Plato
  • ‘Sheen’ is a verb. It means ‘snorting cocaine’
  • Star Wars is based on the lesser known Shakespeare work Thy Force Be Stronge
  • Today is the International Day of Uninformed Pub Arguments
  • Mayan prophecy states that Beliebers will be responsible for the apocalypse
  • Piers Morgan is widely regarded as the face of journalistic integrity
  • Over 36% of the world's internet traffic consists entirely of angry tweets from Liverpool fans
  • The original title of Mario Puzo's The Godfather was Italians Say the Darndest Things
  • World War III was scheduled for 1987, but was cancelled after Sofia Coppola threatened to appear in it
  • Leggings are pants

  • The first fact was conceived of by Sir William of Sasquatch in 47 B.C.
  • The line 'sleeps with the fishes' originally came from the film The Codfather
  • If you throw a boomerang and it doesn't come back, you're entitled to a full refund from the manufacturer
  • "The Arab Spring" is the weather in the Middle East
