KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating a bizarre case of an award-winning maskandi (traditional music) artist who, according to fans and relatives, has returned from the dead.

Yesterday, officers did DNA tests and took fingerprints of a man believed to be Mgqumeni "Kwakhe" Khumalo.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the results of the tests would be released on Tuesday. "We have also taken his fingerprints and hope to have the results by tomorrow," he said.

The results of the tests will determine whether the police file an application in the High Court in Pietermaritzburg to exhume the body of a man buried as Khumalo two years ago.

Since Thursday, more than 20 armed police officers have barricaded the Khumalo family's homestead in Nquthu, near Newcastle.

More than a thousand hysterical maskandi fans, some of whom had travelled more than 600km, encircled the homestead, desperate to catch a glimpse of the man alleged to be Khumalo.

"We expect thousands more fans and people who want to determine whether or not there is any truth to the story," said Mdunge.

He declined to disclose how many more officers would be deployed in Nquthu.

Khumalo allegedly died in December 2009 while he and members of his band were driving to a traditional healer. His funeral was attended by hordes of fans and relatives.

The man claiming to be the musician said he couldn't remember much about the past two years. He said he had woken up in the veld somewhere in Johannesburg last week and "strangely" knew his way around the city.

He was able to locate his former band members, who were shocked to see him and took him home.

His uncle, Nkosingiphile Khumalo, said relatives thought they were seeing a ghost.
