Nando's tells DSTV too late to air ad
Nando's has turned down an offer by DSTV to flight a 'xenophobia' advertisement initially banned by the pay channel.
Business Day reported that Nando's marketing manager Thabang Ramogase said it seemed as if DSTV wanted to flight the advertisement only because rival pay channel TopTV showed it on nine of its channels last week.
"They [DSTV] should have stuck to their principles and not jumped on the bandwagon like they did when SABC decided to reject the advertisement," Ramogase told the newspaper.
Earlier this month, the advertisement was refused air-play by the SA Broadcasting Corporation, M-NET, DSTV and e.tv.
DSTV media sales CEO Chris Hitchings said the company reversed its decision after the Advertising Standards Authority of SA dismissed complaints about the advertisement.
The advertisement begins with the voice-over: "You know what's wrong with South Africa? It's all you foreigners."
It then shows people of different races and cultures across the country disappearing in puffs of smoke.
Eventually, only a Khoisan man is left, and he declares he is not going anywhere: "You @&*$# [swearword blocked out in advertisement] found us here."
On Friday, e.tv told Business Day it stood by its decision not to flight the advertisement.
