Valve, the company behind hit games Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Team Fortress 2, is releasing its internal movie-making software for free.
The Source Filmmaker is designed to work with games built on the Source engine and has been used to make official trailers for Portal 2, the Left 4 Dead games, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
"We've condensed the entire pipeline of an animation studio down onto a single gaming PC," explains the program's introductory video.
"This allows us to combine the arts of cinematography, film editing and animation."
Most specifically, Valve wants users to create movies, short films and skits from within its free game Team Fortress 2.
That's why the initial public version of Source Filmmaker is designed to work with Team Fortress 2 only, and the current beta testing phase is aimed at dedicated Team Fortress 2 fans, but it doesn't stop skilled users from modifying it to work with entirely original material.
