Top 10 Yash Chopra films with videos

Times LIVE | 22 October, 2012 13:07
A still from the 1989 film 'Chandni'.

Everyone who knows Bollywood knows the name Yash Chopra.

The director-producer was known as the King of Romance for a reason – he brought love to life on the silver screens of India and the world.

From his first film in 1959, Dhool Ka Phool to his last Jab Tak Hai Jaan to be released later this year, his 50 years of films have enchanted the world over.

His death on Sunday is a great loss to the Indian film industry. He leaves behind wife Pamela– who was a playback singer for many of his films – and two children, also producers and directors Aditya and Uday.

We’ve decided on his top 10 films of all time.

10. Darr (1993)
This psychological thriller love story marks the beginning of the Chopra-Shahrukh Khan love affair. An obsessed lover played by Shahrukh goes to great lengths to get the girl who is already happily engaged to someone else. The film is considered to be one of Sharukh’s best performances and earned him a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Villain. It also includes one of our all-time favourite songs, Jadu Teri Nazar.

9. Waqt (1965)
This was the first Bollywood film to try the concept of the all A-list cast, starting a trend. It starred Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore and Sadhana – an all-star cast back in the day. It also brought to life the theme of an estranged family coming together – an important aspect of Indian life. This happy family is separated by time (waqt), and they then go through a series of trials trying to reunite. It’s a happy family-oriented film with tear jerking moments.

8. Lamhe (1991)
Though it was not a box-office success in India, Lamhe did well overseas, especially in India, which was going through a boom of NRI (non-resident Indian) immigrations. People latched onto the foreign and new nature of Bollywood with this one. Many consider it to be Yash Chopra’s masterpiece. It was Dr. Rahi Masoom Reza’s last movie as writer. He died a couple of months after the release of the film. The story tells of a man who falls in love with a woman who dies, and her daughter growing up being exactly like her. Sridevi won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her dual role as mother and daughter.

7. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
This love story was the first coming together of the explosive on-screen duo Shahrukh and Kajol – the first of many an epic love story brought to life by the two. It was also directed by Chopra’s son Aditya. It tells the story of a young couple who fall in love on a European tour. She is promised to a horrible man her father chose for her, but the boy tries to win over the girl's parents so that she can marry him instead. It is the longest-running Bollywood film in history, and is still playing at the Maratha Mandir theatre in Mumbai.

6. Mohabbatein (2000)
Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan in opposing roles, this was Aditya’s second directorial venture after Dilwale. It also features model-turned actress Aishwarya Rai in flashbacks as Khan's lover. Mohabbatein is most notable for being the first time that veteran actors Bachchan and Shahrukh appeared on screen together – also an fiery combination. It tells of a man who, after his love’s death, tries to win over her cold-hearted father by showing him how beautiful love is. It was Chopra’s second son Uday’s acting debut.

5. Chandni (1989)
The tale of love, horrible in-laws, heartbreak and the love triangle are all present in this blockbuster, which saw Sridevi cementing her role as the best actress of the ‘80s. The success of its soundtrack was instrumental in ending the era of the violent film, bringing back the musical. It was and still is a huge success. It was groundbreaking in toying with the idea that parents can be wrong.

4. Veer-Zaara (2004)
Set in the conflict between India and Pakistan, this film tells of a star-crossed romance and unfortunate love story of an Indian Air Force Squadron Leader Veer, and a Pakistani woman hailing from a rich political family, Zaara. The are separated for over twenty years until a Pakistani lawyer, finds Veer in prison, and upon listening to his story, tries to get him freed. Again, a star-studded cast of Shahrukh, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji, Manoj Bajpai, Kirron Kher, Divya Dutta and Anupam Kher ensured its success. Bachchan and Hema Malini make special appearances in the film. The soundtrack was quite special because the music was based on old compositions by the late Madan Mohan, which was found in archives.

3. Kabhie Kabhie (1976)
A legendary story about love, heartbreak and reigniting of old flames, the film introduced themes of adoption, potential cheating and disillusionment in marriage. It was groundbreaking for the time, and gave way to many more films to break the rules of the love story. Its music and cast made up of Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Raakhee and a young Rishi Kapoor, it was a box office hit and made its way to South African cinemas, starting a local Bollywood craze.

2. Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)
A huge hit, this film tells of the love lives of dancers in a musical dance troupe in another a love triangle. The tag line is "Someone somewhere is made for you..." and explores the idea of fate and God having a hand in every love story on Earth. Shahrukh, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor with Akshay Kumar in a supporting role, it was a success all over the world. It was also the first Bollywood to be shot in Germany. The music and dancing made it an even bigger hit.

1. Silsila (1981)
Possibly one of the greatest Bollywood films of all time, Silsila tells of a man who marries his dead best friend’s girlfriend due to her being pregnant, while having an affair with his love. Following the risqué nature of Kabhie Kabhie, Bachchan, his now wife Jaya Bhaduri and Rekha brought this fiery story of betrayal to the screen in passionate performances. Many believed that Bachchan and Rekha were having an affair in real life and that’s what made the film so realistic. It came under fire for being so open about adultery, pre-marital sex and showing scenes alluding to sex. Silsila is still loved today, with many channels still showing it again and again.
