The fifth annual MTN Radio Awards took place on Saturday at a gala event at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The black tie event was host to various people from the radio industry, from commercial stations such as Metro FM and 5FM to campus and community stations such as UJFM, VOWFM and TUKS FM.

The awards opened with Minister of Communications, Yunus Carrim. He took the podium and made jokes with regard to elections and said that he should have worn his party’s t-shirt to illustrate which party to vote for in the upcoming elections.

The evening had a total of 33 awards that were further sub-categorised into Campus, Community, PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) and Commercial.

TUKS FM was one of the night’s biggest winners, having won nine out of the 14 awards that it was nominated for including Best Daytime Show and the coveted Station of the Year award in the campus category.

TALK RADIO 702 won the Station of the Year award in the commercial category beating 567 CAPE TALK, Jacaranda FM, METRO FM and KAYA FM.

Radio veteran, known as the ‘King of Broadcasting’, John Berks was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award.

One of the highlights of the evening was the tribute to Nelson Mandela in the middle of the ceremony. A presentation of his photographs and quotes and voice-overs from a number of his speeches had the crowd in a roar of applause. Co-host for the evening, Alex Jay said that he felt proud of the media industry for the way in which they covered the death of the former statesman.
