Having brought The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo to film in 2011, director David Fincher says that its two sequels are still very much a prospect.

The first Hollywood adaptation had Rooney Mara as its heroine, the actress then nominated for an Oscar as a result of her performance, and the film as a whole made $232m worldwide on a $90m budget.

"Because [Sony] already has spent millions of dollars on the rights and the script, I think it will result in something," he said, speaking to Swedish news outlet Afton Bladet.

"There is huge potential in the script that we now have. I can go as far to say that it's very different from the book," he teased, leaving something in there for novel and film fans alike, calling the script "very dramatic and cool."

That conversation took place during promotion for another literary adaptation, this time the October debut Gone Girl, with Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck taking the lead roles from Gillian Flynn's thriller.

But as Afton Bladet and Fincher note, a new production requires Sony to accommodate the availability of Daniel Craig, who is heavily involved in the current run of James Bond films; a 24th in the series is due October 2015, with production to start this December - "We'd need to schedule around it," conceded Fincher, while remaining keen on returning to Sweden for another on-location shoot.
