Miss South Africa Rolene Strauss may well be on top of the world tonight.

She will compete against more than 120 other contestants in London for the Miss World title.

The 22-year-old, who is studying medicine at the University of the Free State, remains a firm favourite with betting agencies to win the pageant.

Bet fred, Ladbrokes and Titanbet have her listed as the favourite at odds of 3.25/1, followed by Miss India Koyal Rana at 7.5/1 and Miss Australia Courtney Thorpe at 11/1.

Strauss said she had been wearing a lucky charm, "a little sapphire ring", since arriving in London on November 20.

"It reminds me of home, my family and loved ones," she said.

This week, Strauss earned a spot in the beach fashion competition, third place in the sports and fitness challenges and remained in the top 10 of the public's favourites.

The contestants have moved from the five-star Marriott Hotel County Hall to the Aloft London ExCel, which is closer to the pageant venue - the ICC Auditorium at London's Royal Docks - where they have been rehearsing since Wednesday.

With her parents in London to support her at the pageant, Strauss looked happy in photographs at a Christmas dinner where the contestants were joined by their families.

"My favourite [event] so far would be the charity gala, where the top 10 Beauty with a Purpose finalists were announced and our national gifts were auctioned to raise money for charity," she said in an e-mail.

She had also enjoyed attending a performance of Phantom of the Opera.

Miss World will be broadcast live on SABC3 from 4pm.
