Black Dillinger first South African to perform at Jamaica’s ‘Sting’ concert
Black Dillinger has become the first South African to perform at the ‘Sting’ concert - the world’s single largest one night reggae event – thanks to the help of the arts and culture ministry. The ministry stepped in to make it possible for Nkululeko Madolo aka Black Dillinger and his manager to travel to Jamaica to perform on Saturday night at the concert which has been an annual institution at Jamworld in Portmore for the past 31 years.“It is high time that South African music is featured at this foremost reggae music festival. What we need and hope to achieve is a rich and dynamic dialogue between the music of the African continent and of the African diaspora‚” said Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa.“Out of this transatlantic partnership will emerge the seeds of a new conversation that insists that ‘We are Africa’. Black Dillinger conveys the yearnings of this new generation‚” Mthethwa added.‘Sting’ began in 1984‚ as an initiative of Isaiah Lang and as a platform to promote dancehall music through affordable stage shows. It is said that the name ‘Sting’ was born from a local popular slang: "Sting yuh a sting an' a shock you a shock!".The platform provided through the ‘Sting’ concerts has launched many careers in the music industry over the years...
