M-Net is currently unable to comment on confirmed reports that Gareth Cliff intends to sue the South African broadcaster for R25 million.

News broke early on Monday morning that Cliff is taking legal steps citing unfair dismissal and defamation after getting axed from the reality singing competition.

Legal papers were handed over to M-Net on Friday and the broadcaster has until Monday, 14:00 to respond.

According to Nondumiso Mabece, head of M-Net’s PR team, senior management is currently in a meeting discussing the matter and are unable to comment at this stage.

Cliff got axed as a judge on the South African version of the popular TV show after a Twitter frenzy over comments related to the Penny Sparrow race debacle.

"To be fired over this whole mess does seem unfair. M-Net has said as much. They said I'm not a racist,” Cliff said shortly after news first broke that he would no longer be part of the TV show.
