Multichoice on Wednesday launched a product offering that will see another subsidiary of global media giant Naspers compete in the digital terrestrial space. GOtv‚ which will cost R99 a month‚ will fall under M-Net despite the fact that the subscribers of the new service will not get access to the premium M-Net channel. They will only get access to the lower grade M-Net Movies Zone.“We’re excited to launch our digital terrestrial television service‚” said Yolisa Phahle‚ chief executive of M-Net. “This is a major step forward for local television and our launch of GOtv is in line with the government’s digital migration process in South Africa‚” she said.The general manager of GOtv SA‚ Tsabiso Letsoela‚ said the product was aimed at South Africans who are currently watching analogue television.“The digital GOtv service offers compelling channels with clearer pictures and sharper sound quality.”The R99 monthly package offers 12 channels classified as four General Entertainment‚ two Music‚ two Children‚ one Sport‚ one Local‚ one Lifestyle & Culture and one Religion.A cheaper offering‚ GOtv Lite at R45 per quarter‚ will offer one religious channel and one for music.Letsoela said M-Net analogue customers would will have to switch over to digital television at some stage. “They don’t have to do anything right now as both analogue and digital signals are running concurrently... Before each province shuts off their analogue signals‚ M-Net will be in touch to guide its analogue customers through the migration process.”GOtv will use digital network towers throughout South Africa‚ which are similar to those used by cellphone companies. Letsoela advised customers to check if the place they want to install the product falls within the coverage areas.Viewers will also need a decoder to access the signal.
