The South African film industry is alive and kicking after three of its films; Ayanda and the Mechanic (Ayanda), Tell Me Sweet Something and Hear Me Move, dominated the 2016 African Movie Academy Awards nominations list, announced on Sunday.

Ayanda and Tell Me Sweet Something lead the South African nominations, with both films nominated for nine awards at the ceremony, to be held in Port Harcourt, Nigeria next month.

The two films will compete against each other in most of the major categories, including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and the prestigious Best Film prize.

Actress Bontle Modiselle (Hear Me Move) will compete with fellow South Africans Thishiwe Ziqubu (Tell me Sweet Something) and Nthati Moshesh (Ayanda) in the Best Supporting Actress category, one of five nominations the film Hear Me Move received.

Commenting on the nominations, Tell Me Sweet Something director Akin Omotoso thanked his team and God for the nominations. The nominations come at the back of a great last few months for the film, after it smashed box office expectations to collect over R2 million in sales.

Ayanda has also had its fair share of success, screening at both the London Film Festival and in theatres in Los Angeles and New York late last year.
