Madonna on Sunday night paid a teary tribute to her friend Prince who died earlier this year.

She was at the Billboard Music Awards where she first performed Nothing Compares 2 U, which Prince wrote and Sinead O'Connor recorded, before bringing Stevie Wonder on stage to sing Purple Rain.

Wearing a sparkling purple suit, Madonna told the crowd watching in Las Vegas that she was eternally thankful to Prince.

"Most of all, thank you Prince Rogers Nelson for all that you've given us."

The pair briefly dated in 1985 and for a while there seemed to be bad blood between them, but that was soon sorted out and just last year Prince was spotted at one of her concerts.

Prince was found dead at his home on 21 April. While the exact cause of his death has yet to be confirmed, there has been much speculation about the use of prescription drugs.

Madge entered the stage on a purple throne and soon enough stars in the crowd, including Rihanna, were spotted singing along.
