UCT student’s film about born-free 'love and misunderstanding' makes waves
A University of Cape Town (UCT) student’s film is making waves on the international film circuit‚ having recently appeared in the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner. The film titled Into Us and Ours is the brainchild of Jessie and Sarah Zinn. It was Jessie’s graduation film‚ which she completed as part of her BA degree in film production.Described as “a story of love and misunderstanding”‚ the film documents the experiences of two born-free South Africans and their reactions to an incident through the lens of race‚ class and sexuality.“It is a simple story – a drama between two young born frees as they begin to question the fundamentals of their connection after an idyllic day takes a hit into the unknown‚” said Jessie.The film‚ according to its creators‚ grapples with how the new South Africa‚ the “rainbow nation”‚ has been built on a tenuous foundation that affects young South Africans on a daily basis.It recently won the Best International Short Film award at the Ivy International Film Festival and was selected for the 69th Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner‚ which wrapped up on Sunday.The film was also selected for several other film festivals including CinemAfrica in Sweden‚ XPOSED International Queer Film Festival in Berlin‚ and the National Film Festival for Talented Youth in Washington‚ which is said to be the world’s largest film festival for emerging directors.This month‚ it will be screened at the Durban International Film Festival‚ the National Arts Festival and the Literally Short Film Festival in the US.“We have been invited to two more festivals in France and Belgium later this year‚” said Jessie.
