Top 5 memorable moments at #SAMA22

There's never a dull moment when the biggest musical acts in the country come together for the annual South African Music Awards. Taking place at the Durban ICC on Saturday night, the star-studded ceremony attracted practically every A-lister that you can think of.

The surprises were strong - AKA getting snubbed was a particular standout - while performances from Nathi, Ricky Rick and DJ Bongz kept the energy cranked high. From Somizi and Thando’s great hosting abilities, to a heartfelt tribute to the late Lebo Mathosa, the awards went off without a hitch. If you missed them, no worries, we've got you covered. #Nonke makes debut on stage

Somizi and Thando Thabethe hardly held back from throwing shade throughout the entire show. Not only did Somizi suggest that the Big Nuz members need his fitness DVD, at one point, Thando jokingly warned Somizi that she will get Bonang to call him to order. However, the best part was when Somizi said: ‘’Ngini thanda noooooooooooooonke [I love all of you],” when closing the show - placing emphasis on ‘nonke,’ a catch-phrase coined by Euphonik during a Twitter rant aimed at his ex Bonang Matheba last month.

Riky Rick’s performance: a fan-favourite

The crowd was on their feet and dancing along as Riky performed his hit songs, Boss Zonke and Sidlukotini. Although the rapper did not win any award, he surely left his legions of fans more than happy.

Nathi walking away with five gongs

The Nomvula hitmaker took home five awards in the categories for best R&B/soul/reggae album, best newcomer, best male artist, best full-track music download and best-selling album.

Somizi going bald

Catching the audience and viewers by surprise, the ever-so spontaneous Somizi decided to shave his head during the live show (as one does when doing an outfit change, right?). Jokingly, he explained that he has become ‘90% straight’ as a result of the haircut. To prove that, Thando dared him to kiss her – and so it happened.

Lebo Mathosa’s tribute

Singers Nakhane Toure and Moneoa took to stage for a touching performance, paying tribute to the late Lebo Mathosa. Singing one of Lebo’s songs, I Love Music, the duo left us with goosebumps. Koyo Bala, who passed on a few months ago, was also honoured during the show.
