The achievement has been hailed by industry commentators and fans alike, including Arts and Culture minister Nathi Mthethwa.

The minister joined the chorus of praise on Tuesday, tweeting: "Congratulations to the producers & cast of Mrs Right Guy for the great reception of the movie since its release on Friday, 3 June. Well done."'

The rom-com apparently secured a spot in the top five films at the box office this past weekend, behind international titles such as X Men – Apocalypse, Angry Birds, Alice Through The Looking Glass and Money Monster.

The film's Thapelo Mokoena took to social media on Tuesday to thank fans for making the film such a success.

"Thank you to everyone who took to the cinemas this past opening weekend. The film has hit the R1million mark in its opening weekend. We encourage all South Africans to get out there & see Mrs Right Guy. Enjoy South African cinema at its best," he wrote.

The film's strong opening comes in the wake of box office success from local films Tell Me Sweet Something, Hear Me Move and Ayanda and the Mechanic in recent months.
