Pastor Andre Olivier of Rivers Church in Sandton found himself making headlines after a video of his weekend sermon sparked widespread debate.

  •

The pastor received backlash from some members of the public who have accused the pastor of making "racist" comments.

Celebrities including Lloyd Cele, Tumisho Masha and Lorna Maseko came out strongly against the claims.

  •

Tumisho has since found himself on the Twitter trends list and on the receiving end of major public backlash for his comments.

Rivers Church has since issued a statement in response to the outrage explaining that it is saddened by the "damage" that has prevailed from the sermon.

"We are deeply saddened by the damage that has prevailed from this weekend’s message. The content in question and expression thereof was clearly not meant for harm," read part of the statement.
