As Zakes Bantwini gets ready to perform at the prestigious Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, America, he revealed that he's determined to win the US audience over.

The singer, who was previously earmarked for the event, put pen to paper last month on the deal that will see him perform at the festival from June 30 to July 3.

"Essence Festival New Orleans USA, you'll understand our sound," he wrote, alongside a clip of himself rehearsing for the festival.

Zakes also hopes that this will open doors for more African acts, pointing out that "the time is now for Africans."
