Former Skeem Saam actor Oros Mampofu has spoken out about online speculation regarding an apparent suicide, allegedly because of his character's death on the show.

Skeem Saam fans were left shocked by Jamma's death during Friday night's episode, after the popular character drowned in a pool of his vomit after he drank too much alcohol during his birthday celebrations.

Shortly after the episode aired, an unconfirmed report about an Eastern Cape teenager committing suicide over her favourite character's death started doing the rounds on social media.

Eastern Cape SAPS provincial spokesman Captain Khaya Tonjeni said that the police could neither confirm or deny the alleged suicide.

"Eastern Cape SAPS cannot confirm or comment on the story because we don’t have reports or records related to it. It would be better if we could get an idea of where in the province the incident happened so that we can make an enquiry in the relevant police station," said Captain Tonjeni in a statement to TMG Entertainment.

Despite the rumour not being validated, the actor has commented on the matter.

"I can't be certain about the news of the passing of a young lady in the Eastern Cape... If this is true I send my heart felt condolences to the family and friends effected by this tragedy," he said.

Oros added that it is important for fans to understand that as story-tellers it's their job to tackle social issues in a responsible manner.

"It's important to realise that we are actors, story-tellers and our objective as artists is to envoke dialogue and tackle social issues. I am moved by the endless well of love I have received, and I can't express the level of gratitude I feel for all the love.

"Keep loving us but on the same note, please grow with us. Evolve with us and express your concerns and issues responsibly so we grow together as I continue on my acting journey."
