Speaking to DRUM, Andrea recalled the morning when she returned to her house after running errands, to find that her gate was attached to police tape marking the crime scene where Anni's body was found.

Subsequently, she met with Anni's parents and tried to comfort them.

"When I met Annie's family for the first time, I humbly apologised on behalf of the people of South Africa for what had happened to their daughter," she told the local publication.

''I wished there was something we could have done to save her life. But I was taken aback by their courage and how their daughter's tragic death united us," she added.

It was after this time that the actress started her morning ritual of lighting candles next to a portrait of Anni, in remembrance of her.

In addition, it was reported in 2014 that the actress planted a tree in memory of Anni as a symbol of renewed life.
