Iconic film and television director Garry Marshall died on Tuesday due to complications from pneumonia, and a slew of actors and film makers who worked with the screen legend are sharing their love, support and condolences on social media.

Henry Winkler, who was catapulted to stardom after landing  the famous role of “The Fonz” in Happy Days, was one of the first to share a heartfelt tribute to Marshall, who died at the age of 81. "Thank you for my professional life,'' he wrote shortly after news broke.

Mandy Moore, who made the move from singing to acting when she was cast in Garry’s 2001 movie The Princess Diaries, tweeted: "Garry Marshall was one of the greats. He connected us all through joy, laughter, compassion & kindness. He also gave me my very 1st job. Sending love to his family and all those he touched with his films/ tv shows over the years. Thank you, Garry!"

Ashton Kutcher, who starred in two of Marshall’s films, New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day explained that he lost a friend and a mentor.

And Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick shared her first experience of when she met Marshall.

Meanwhile, Richard Gere, who starred in Pretty Woman, said Marshall ''had a heart of the purest gold'' in a statement.

''Garry of course was one of those truly important people one is blessed to meet in one’s lifetime,'' he wrote.

"Besides being the pulse and life force of ‘Pretty Woman’… a steady helmsman on a ship that could have easily capsized… he was a super fine and decent man, husband and father who brought real joy and love and infectious good spirits to every thing and everyone he crossed paths with. Everyone loved Garry. He was a mentor and a cheerleader and one of the funniest men who ever lived. He had a heart of the purest gold and a soul full of mischief. He was Garry."

Marshall’s list of credits spans across decades and includes such accomplishments as creating Happy Days, transforming The Odd Couple from a Broadway play to a five-season TV show, and helming Pretty Woman and The Princess Diaries.
