In the midst of hundreds of tributes for late rally driver Gugu Zulu, actress and TV personality Nonhle Thema has shared a touching message of support she once received from Zulu.

Nonhle paid her respects to the rally driver by sharing a heart-warming message he had sent her at a time when she was going through a particularly difficult ordeal.

In the message, Zulu explained that he did not know Nonhle personally, but still felt to reach out to her to give her support during her ordeal.

  • God gave us a gift, says Gugu Zulu's mom

The family of racing car driver Gugu Zulu is still grappling to come to terms with his untimely death on Monday morning, after attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

"Gugu Zulu was an incredible guy..I found this Facebook post he once sent me in March 2008 gosh my heart is so sad.. May He Rest In Perfect Peace," Nonhle wrote.

It is the latest in a long list of tributes paid to a man who has been praised by many for his kind and compassionate spirit.

  • Gugu Zulu's body has arrived back in South Africa

The body of late racing car driver Gugu Zulu has been brought back to South Africa from Tanzania.

"I know him as a friend who was warm and kind. South Africans know him as a great talented motorsport athlete who excelled on the race track. His family knows him as a loving husband and father. He passed on while on a mission to help others and that made him a selfless South African many should emulate. Gugu was young and still had a lot to offer our country. South Africa is poorer without him," Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said in a statement at Zulu's passing.

Zulu died on Monday while trying to summit Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. He was part of a Trek4Mandela expedition to raise funds for sanitary pads for more than 350 000 impoverished girls. He had been experiencing breathing problems and was rushed to hospital prior to his passing.

Zulu will be laid to rest next week.
