Muvhango actress Maumela Mahuwa, who is popularly known for her character the chief's wife Susan, has reflected on how far she's come despite her troubled childhood.

In a revealing interview with Drum magazine Maumela shared painful memories of how she's had to deal with people calling her 'ugly' for most of her life.

Maumela revealed that looking back at what she calls her "dark past" she realises that it "overshadowed" her life until she made numerous changes.

"Being told you are ugly is not nice. When I agreed with them that I was ugly, I stopped loving myself," she told the publication.

Maumela explained that as a child she was told that she was too dark, her nose is flat and her lips are too big.

"I saw nothing beautiful in me. All the rejections in my life confirmed that something was wrong with me and I settled in my self-pity," she said.

But the good news is that after 12 years of working on her self-esteem Maumela is in a much better space.

Speaking to Sowetan earlier this year Maumela also spoke out about how growing up in poverty after being abandoned by her mother, who had no means of supporting her after going through a divorce.

Maumela explained how she had to wash dishes and scrape pots for left overs from neighbours as she was left to fend for herself for over a year.

Despite her incredibly troubled childhood the actress is making waves in the industry and was most recently nominated for Best TV Actress at the Fame Awards.
