Veteran musician Arthur Mafokate has revealed that he received calls and messages of support from ANC leadership, following the backlash he received on Twitter this week for seeming to show support for the ANC's rivals.

Arthur found himself in the midst of a social media storm on Monday after he sang the praises of the DA's Herman Mashaba and EFF leader Julius Malema only hours before Mashaba was inaugurated as the new mayor of Johannesburg.

Arthur's remarks drew harsh criticism from fans, who accused him of not having a backbone and questioned his loyalty.

But the outspoken Arthur has defended his credentials as a ANC member and claims that he has been receiving support and encouragement from the ANC's leadership following the fiasco.

Posting a picture of some of the party's leaders, Arthur thanked them for standing by him.

"Love my ANC - I just wanna express my heartfelt gratitude to all the ANC leaders that called me since last night till this morning to inspire and encourage me for all the good work I do for the ANC! United we stand, divided we fall. True leadership," he wrote in an Instagram post.

Arthur's comment came only hours after he posted a picture of himself in ANC colours and saluting the party.

He also shrugged off his critics, saying that some of the greatest spirits have faced criticism from "mediocre minds."

"This is the thing about me, I am not fazed by enemy’s comments, I have been through a lot and I know who I am. Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds," he tweeted.
