Minister Nathi Mthethwa hails SA Oscars entry film

Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa has congratulated the cast and producers of SA film Noem My Skollie, after it was chosen as South Africa's official entry to the 2017 Academy Awards (Oscars).

The Afrikaans film was this week announced as the country's entry to the prestigious award ceremony's Best Foreign Film category.

The decision has been hailed by the local film industry, with Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa tweeting his excitement at the news.

The film has been seen by over 32,000 people in South Africa and has received general acclaim from critics.

Nine finalists from among the dozens of entries submitted by countries around the world will be short listed on 17 January 2017. From there, the final five nominees in the Best Foreign Film category will be announced on 24 January 2017.

The winner will be announced at the Oscars ceremony on 26 February 2017.

"Noem My Skollie's great box office performance has now been crowned with the nomination as South Africa's entry into the Oscars. We are extremely proud to have been part of getting this amazing film on to SA screens and are excited about the continued potential in our market and on the global stage," said Chief Executive Officer of Ster Kinekor Entertainment, Mario Dos Santos, in a statement this week.
