Oscar award-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o believes that while a film has the potential to move people into making a difference in their own communities, it is highly unlikely that it will change things in Africa.

During an interview with TimesLIVE, the actress - who stars as Harriet, the mother of real-life Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi on Disney's Queen of Katwe - revealed that putting all our eggs on a film to make a change in the continent will not yield any results.

"A film cannot change a life. It can reflect life, but it on its own cannot change things. What is important is that, when a film touches you, what it affects you to do, is valuable," Lupita said when asked how Africans can uplift themselves long after the spotlight brought by Queen of Katwe into the continent has died down.

Lupita further expressed that she hopes the story is able to motivate people to improve their own communities, however, stood firm in her sentiments that a movie won't be able to change Africa (for the better).

"When you have that accessibilty to the story, when you have that empathy for a people and a place, hopefully it results in people being moved to do something in their own communities, or maybe even in Katwe. That is the hope. But for a film on its own to make the difference we so seek in the world, is a lofty demand."
