Isidingo actor Jack Devnarain shared fond memories of Ahmed Kathrada's cameo appearance on the popular soapie, explaining that Uncle Kathy was a firm fan of the show.

The actor said that a decision was made to feature the struggle veteran on the soapie after producers learned that Isidingo was his favourite show.

"We had a script ready for him, not that he cared. Kim Englebrecht was on the scene, so you can imagine where his eyes were. It can be daunting. The set is very technical but he took it all in his stride."

He was speaking at the Nelson Mandela Foundation on Tuesday morning where a host of friends, family, colleagues and those who knew Uncle Kathy shared memories of him.

Kathrada died in the early hours of Tuesday morning after being ill for the past month with his condition deteriorating over the last 24 hours.

When remembering Uncle Kathy, Jack said that although he was the actor, it was Kathrada who played many roles.

"Some of the roles he palyed was all about life and death. The stakes were that high. He had to disguise himself. He had to grow a beard and wear dark glasses. He always lived by the code."
