Africa Unites to honour Gito Baloi
African music lovers will be treated to sounds and performance from across continent this weekend, with a special focus on Gito Baloi.
Friends of Gito Baloi - a collective of musicians dedicated to sharing the music and legacy of the late Gito Baloi will be performing at the Africa Unites concert.
The ensemble features Steve Newman (acoustic guitar), Pedro Pinto from 340ml (vocals), Dave Reynolds (steelpans), Tlale Makhene (percussion), Bernice Boikanyo (drums) and Sakhile Nkosi (bass).
The show includes music from Tananas, Gito’s solo albums and the posthumous release Beyond.
The concert will take place in the tent on the Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown on September 3. The Africa Unites is a joint event of the Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition and the 2010 Joburg Arts Alive International Festival.
Among those performing is Aly Keita who hails from the Ivory Coast and \
Nezio Tembe, a Mozambican actor and musician whose music is influence by Mozambique’s Marrabenta music, as well as South African newcomer, Vuyo Tyolo whose original music is a mix of afro-soul fused with ragga, ethno-trad and a touch of jazz.
Tickets cost R100 at Computicket and the show starts at 19h30.
