Zola hits high note in Brazil

GABISILE NDEBELE | 02 September, 2010 22:420 Comments

Multi-award winning kwaito star Zola is mixing it up with international celebrities in Brazil to record a song for the 2014 Soccer World Cup.

The 33-year-old singer, whose real name Bonginkosi Dlamini, took to the stage with the Brit Award-winning musician and songwriter Dave Stewart to improvise a new song.

Stewart was a member of Annie Lennox's 1980s British pop group Eurythmics.

"Dave called me to the stage with the other artists that were there from other countries, and challenged us to try come up with a song for several charities that work with children of Brazil," said Zola.

The song, which does not have a title yet, will be recorded in the UK soon. This is not the first time that Zola has collaborated with international stars.

He was recommended to be part of the festival line-up by Gavin Hood, Academy Award-winning director of the movie Tsotsi.

The four-times winner of South African Music Awards has worked before with US rappers Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur.

The latter project came about when Shakur's mother, Afeni, sent a recording of a Shakur song to Zola three years ago after she heard the Impepho hitmaker sing in the US.

Zola is also well known for his acting roles, and he worked with Hood on Tsotsi.

He has acted in the local drama Yizo Yizo, the novel-based film Drum and his self-titled reality show Zola7.
