South African celebrity DJ Sbu on Wednesday posted a photo of his ballot paper on Facebook.

Posting as DJ Sbu Online, the accompanying text read: “#Provincial I also voted for the ONLY movement with enough capacity to take this country forward. #VivaANC”.

The photo clearly shows the provincial ballot paper and his ‘X’ next to the ANC.

It is an offence to take and/or publish photographs which reveal a person's vote on a ballot paper, said the Independent Electoral Commission.

“Upon conviction, offenders will be liable to a fine or a term of imprisonment not exceeding one year," said IEC spokeswoman Kate Bapela on Sunday.

"Voters may take photographs of themselves outside the voting station and of their inked thumbs to show their participation."

DJ Sbu has ignored several comments asking him to remove the photo as it is illegal, and many fans have uploaded photos of their own ballot papers in support.

After a few hours, DJ Sbu removed the photo.
