Dolce and Gabbana's magazine director has resigned following their controversial remarks about same-sex parenting.

Giuliano Federico revealed he made the ''difficult decision'' to step down as the director of Swide magazine following seven years at the company after the designers, Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce, angered several stars including Sir Elton John by revealing they ''opposed gay adoptions''.

In a statement posted to his Facebook page, Federico said the views expressed by the pair are: ''Totally incompatible with my conscience as a human being in the contemporary world and inconsistent with my commitment to individual involved in the political debate. This is why I resigned from the post of managing director of Swide.com.''

However, the professional insisted he still has respect for his employers, but believes the designers should ''talk with clothes'' instead of expressing their own opinions.

He added: ''I think designers should do the designers and talk with clothes. And I think it is fair to recognize Stefano and Domenico's ambitious and visionary desire to make their brand and their fashion creations bearers of values.

''I am proud to be Italian, our traditions and our past, but I think that Italy can look to a more modern and egalitarian future for its citizens and its children. All the children. (sic)''

Since making the controversial comments, the designers have faced a backlash from stars including Elton, who called for a boycott of the brand, although he was seen carrying a bag featuring the company's logo while in Los Angeles on Monday.
