The story behind Claire Mawisa’s dreadlocks

05 May 2016 - 15:59 By Sefiso Hlongwane

Having started growing her dreadlocks from 2007‚ it has almost become impossible to imagine TV and radio personality Claire Mawisa without her signature tresses. Although it’s unimaginable to speak about her without mentioning her locks‚ Claire doesn’t believe she should be defined by hair‚ nor does she feel overly attached it.Taking to Instagram‚ the former model posted a picture of herself when she was 16 – at the peak of her modelling career – before she had cut her long‚ relaxed hair to allow the transition to natural hair. She revealed that growing her locks wasn’t the intention when she opted for natural hair.“I realise many people think that I have always had #naturalhair or #dreadlocks. I only returned to natural hair when I was 21‚” she wrote.Adding‚ “This picture was taken when I was 16‚ at the peak of my modelling career. When I cut my shoulder length relaxed hair to transition to natural‚ my intention wasn't to grow locks‚ or even to stay natural forever.”Claire goes on to explain that she hasn’t ruled out the idea of removing her dreadlocks.“If it's time to do it‚ and if it feels right‚ I'll make the change.”A photo posted by Claire B.
